LT COL RICHARD DRAKE, RAPC
FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE 1st BATTALION - 1978-mid 80s
I am very sad to report the death, on 12 Feb 17, following a stroke of Lt Col Richard Drake, RAPC.
You will recall that Richard was our Paymaster in South Armagh, Pirbright, Berlin and Hounslow and you will remember his team, which included the wonderful Lionel ('Q' Cooke), who all looked after us with such diligence, helpfulness and good humour for all those years.
Richard was one of those people who entered wholeheartedly into the spirit of Battalion life and contributed greatly to the enormous amount of fun that the Battalion enjoyed in Berlin, particularly. I remember his delight at being presented by the Commanding Officer with a Brigade Stable Belt and being instructed to wear it!
He was a most delightful man, and how lucky we all were to have him as our Paymaster. Paymasters used to come and go, but it is a sure sign of the high regard and affection in which he was held that he retained his many Grenadier friends for the rest of his life.
If anyone would like to write to Tina, his Wife, her address is: 11 Duck’s Meadow, Marlborough, Wiltshire, SN8 4DE.
Richard's Funeral has already taken place and it is thought that there will be a Memorial Service in due course, in which case, details will follow.
