A Police Constable in the East Riding Constabulary, joined the Army in 1914, into the Grenadier Guards. Arrived in France 11th March 1915, 20th Brigade, 7th Division, BEF. Sent into the front line at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, served in front line duties until December 1915 when he was wounded whilst on a reconnaissance mission during an action for which he received the DCM. Invalided out of the Army in 1916, rejoined the Constabulary. Retired in 1936 and then ran the New Inn in Thorton Dale, North Yorks until his death in December 1942
