Officer's Personal Occurrence - Lt Col R Dorney MBE

23 November 2022

Grenadiers,

Regrettably I must notify you of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Richard Dorney MBE on Friday 18 November 2022. “Skid”, as he was known, was out walking with a friend when he collapsed following a suspected heart attack. He was 62 years old and had joined the Regiment in 1977. Over a 39 year Army career he was the model of a Grenadier; a Colour Sergeant at Sandhurst, then Company Sergeant Major of the Queen’s Company, Drill Sergeant and Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion from 1999-2001 (in East Tyrone and Windsor). He was commissioned in 2001. By the time he retired he was a Lieutenant Colonel and he had been awarded the MBE in 2007 for bringing the Trauma Risk Management System into service and then developing it further to support those wounded on operations. After leaving the Army he founded Strong Mind Resilience, a business delivering expert training in mental health awareness, personal resilience, suicide awareness and trauma management. He also had several books published. In so many ways he was one of the outstanding individuals of his generation. More details will be circulated about Skid’s funeral when they are known.
